Winter is here, and for some areas, it can be worse than others. It is not uncommon for ice or snow storms to hit during one of the worst climates by far, thanks to global warming. For a lot of people, this can be a shock as they may have never experienced extreme weather or winter storms before. Here are a few tips on how to protect your home during an ice or snow storms.

This is the most important thing to do, as an ice or snow storm might block your way to the supermarket or anywhere in that matter of fact. Food deliveries are usually unavailable as restaurants might be closed down as well. There is a high chance that your electricity might go down, and in result you aren’t able to cook much food.

This is why it’s important to stock up on food before the storm hits. Canned food and anything that doesn’t need heating to prepare is always best. You should also keep a fair supply of clean water to drink from and possibly, to clean yourselves e.g. washing your hands, wiping your body in case the showers doesn’t work. This is because there have been many cases where the water in the pipes are frozen and are unable to flow out of your home’s faucets.

Keep Your Home Warm

Insulation is everything when it comes to preparing for a storm. Insulate your windows and doors so that snow won’t build up or try to force their way inside the house. Install floor heating for added warmth, and keep your fireplace lit in case you have one. Your room heater should also be turned on well before the storm hits, so that it’d be warm enough even when the temperature drops.

Have warm water ready in pots or thermoses to make hot beverages that can help keep the body’s temperature at bay. Keep your home safe from the outside weather by ensuring all entrances are completely sealed, even your basement. Use acudor access panels for all airway vent doors, preferably one with heating, so that the cold wind won’t make its way inside your house.

We never know what might happen in a snow storm. Someone might fall incredibly sick and need medical attention immediately.

Be sure to stock up on basic home medicine or any special medication needed by any member of the household. There should always be alcohol to clean wounds, bandages, painkillers, and antibiotics. You can also prepare anti-vomit and anti-diarrhea medicine, and paracetamol for fever. In any case, ensure that your phone is always turned on and not far from you, should you need to call the emergency hotline.
